NASA researchers have confirmed that Earth will one day lose its oxygen-rich atmosphere. A study supported by NASA's Astrobiology Program predicts that, roughly a billion years from now, natural solar and geological processes will cause atmospheric oxygen levels to decline dramatically. Over time, the planet will gradually return to an oxygen-poor state-much like the atmosphere that existed before complex life emerged.
